Types of pigs

Nowadays, in Thailand there are many breeds of pig and the appearance of pigs is due to the development of breeds according to the needs of breeders and the popularity of consumers. Pigs can be divided into 3 types according to the shape and quality of the meat as follows;

1.The Lard type
This type of pig is fat and short with a thick body, small hips with red meat but full of fat. Currently, it is not very popular for consumers because they prefer more vegetable oil than lard.  The lard breeds are native species and the location of this breed is originally from China ,Hainanese.

2.The meat type
This type of pig is in between the lard and the bacon type. They have a longer body than the lard type, with a big shoulder and thick thigh. Pigs of this type are produced by breeding and the selection of increasing more red meat with less fat. This type of pig are The Duroc breed, the Hampshire breed etc.

3.The bacon type
This type of pig is large, thin, long bodied, big boned, tall legs with small hips. The bacon type has a streaky pork which is suitable for making bacon. These types of pig are The Landrace breed and the Largewhite breed etc.
